The Foundation was set up as a generalist grantmaking trust in 1971. We continue with the broad philanthropic interests of our benefactor Sir John Ellerman, while reflecting changing times.

About Us
We are an independent grantmaking foundation supporting charities that make a difference to people, society and the natural world.
What we fund
We aim to advance the wellbeing of people, society and the natural world by focusing on the arts, environment and social action. We believe these areas can make an important contribution to wellbeing.
As a responsive funder we listen to what our applicants think is important rather than pursuing our own agenda.
We support organisations whose work has reach and significance across the UK. In order for our funds to have as wide an impact as possible we look for charities that have a national footprint.
We will support core costs or projects, depending on what is most needed. We are happy for our grants to be used as matched funding.
We wish to be flexible in our funding. We do have funding criteria but there are times when we will venture outside them if we believe it would be more effective.
Our values
Relationships are important to us across every aspect of our grantmaking, and in the ways in which we work with others. Our values guide and reflect how we work. We are a responsive funder, listening and responding to what applicants and our wider stakeholder network judge is important.
We have well developed and regularly reviewed funding guidelines, enabling us to be discerning in our decisions about whom and what to support.
We value all our stakeholder relationships, including organisations we fund and those applying to us, and seek to have a personal touch. Our Trustees are involved at every stage of an application, and we always meet an applicant before a grant is made.
We prefer to be connected and are in regular contact with relevant colleagues and partners in the charitable and investing worlds. We also like to keep in touch with organisations we fund, convening and linking with them and others from time to time.
We are willing to be flexible and may venture outside our funding criteria or our usual ways of working, if we believe a different approach would be more effective.

We achieve our aim by:
- Funding charities for work that has national significance in the fields of the arts, environment and social action (our funding categories). We believe these areas can make an important contribution to wellbeing; and
- investing and managing our funds in such a way that balances the desire to maintain grantmaking capacity, operating in the long-term, and seeking to ensure that our investments are not poorly aligned to our aim and values.
