Who we are

The Global Resilience Partnership (GRP)

The Global Resilience Partnership advances resilience through identifying and scaling on the ground innovation, generating and sharing knowledge, and shaping policy. Resilience underpins sustainable development in an increasingly unpredictable world. We envisage an inclusive world in harmony with nature, that is better prepared to cope with shocks, adapt to change, and transform – all within planetary boundaries.

GRP is made up of 60+ organisations that have joined forces to work together towards this vision.

GRP is registered as a non-profit organisation in South Africa and co-hosted by the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University.

Our approach

A new approach is required to enable people, households, communities, countries, and/or systems to cope with unforeseen events and transform in the face of sudden or protracted crises. At GRP, we believe resilience is about having the capacity to persist, adapt, and transform in the face of change.

To deliver these outcomes, we have developed a set of principles that guide GRP’s approach to resilience. These are:

Embrace Complexity and challenges

Working to identify the root causes of complex development challenges, and how these can be addressed within the political, economic, ecological, and social systems in which they exist.

Recognise Constant Change

Risks and stresses are becoming increasingly unpredictable, uncertain, and unavoidable. Systems that have the capacity to navigate dynamic and uncertain futures are required.

Enable Inclusive Decision Making

Putting people and communities, especially women and marginalised groups, at the centre of decisions and empowering them to help develop equitable and sustainable solutions.

Enhance Ecosystems Integrity

Approaches to development must ensure a good life for all while maintaining the integrity of the Earth’s ecosystems.

Promote Flexibility and Learning

A rigid or fixed solution will not build resilience for change; approaches need to be adaptive and responsive, constantly learning from what does and does not work.

Leverage Innovation and Opportunity

Developing new solutions and innovations that engage with the complexity of development challenges will not only help build resilience but will be essential to transforming to sustainable and just development.

The Global Resilience Partnership advances resilience through identifying and scaling on the ground innovation, generating and sharing knowledge, and shaping policy.

Innovation

There is a need for a safe space to test and scale disruptive and bold ideas. GRP surfaces and tests resilience innovations and incubates new ideas by designing and running innovation challenges and supporting peer-to-peer learning on innovation.

Knowledge

How communities and countries build resilience will be dependent upon their capacity to anticipate, plan and take action to respond to a wide range of risks. This is particularly the case for least developed countries. GRP works with communities, practitioners, academia, civil society and national governments to connect, share, and advance resilience insights and knowledge.

Policy

GRP works to build a diverse movement of organisations to raise the ambition on resilience and increase investments to where it is needed the most. We ensure that those at the frontline of resilience challenges play a leading role in this endeavor.
