About

At Future Earth, we believe that research, innovation, and collaboration can transform the world toward sustainability. We harness the experience and reach of thousands of scientists and innovators from across the globe. Together, this global community facilitates research, mobilises networks, sparks innovation, and turns knowledge into action.

Who We Are

Future Earth harnesses the experience and reach of thousands of scientists and innovators from across the globe. This global community is spread over a series of networks and governing and advisory bodies.

GOVERNING COUNCIL

The Future Earth Governing Council is the elected, operational decision-making structure working on behalf of the Assembly. It oversees the strategic and scientific direction of Future Earth and supports timely decision processes to advance Future Earth’s agenda, strategies, activities and structures. The Governing Council is composed of 17 voting members representing the Future Earth Community: the Global Research Networks, the National and Regional Structures, and the Global Secretariat Hubs (Boards of Directors and Funders). In addition, the Governing Council has dedicated seats for representatives from low and middle-income countries as well as early career professionals.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The Future Earth Assembly is an inclusive body representing the full scope of the Future Earth community. The Assembly provides a platform for broad consultation and enables the full community to participate in the development of Future Earth core agenda, strategies, activities and structures.

SECRETARIAT

The day-to-day operations of Future Earth are carried out by the Secretariat, which is based in eight Global Hubs. These Global Hubs are located in Canada (Montreal), China (Beijing), France (Paris), Japan (Tokyo), South Asia (Bengaluru), Sweden (Stockholm), Taipei (Taipei), and the USA (Boulder and Fort Collins, Colorado, and Fairfax, Virginia).

CUSTODIAN ORGANIZATIONS

Future Earth has been supported by four Custodian Organizations: the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (UNESCO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Science Council (ISC), and the Belmont Forum. These organizations are considered key to achieve Future Earth’s mission by lending their name and leveraging their reputation, networks and other resources to support Future Earth’s development, advance its international positioning and effective multi-stakeholder engagement. Custodian Organizations are responsible for establishing and supporting Future Earth’s overall mandate, ensuring the fulfillment of its vision and mission, and safeguarding Future Earth’s core values.

Strength in Networks

We experiment in generating new ideas, innovations, and collaborations. In that vein, we are working with tech companies to develop new approaches to reducing carbon emissions. We also foster networks of early career researchers and other innovators, encouraging new ways of thinking about how sustainability research and practice gets done.

Connecting the Dots

Future Earth supports 27 Global Research Networks that together address the complex interactions between natural, social and technological systems, and how those interactions affect, across time and space, the planet’s life support systems, socio economic development, and human wellbeing.

A Systems Based Approach to Transformations in Global Sustainability.

Future Earth is working towards a sustainable global future by developing a deeper understanding of complex Earth systems and human dynamics across disciplines. We’re looking closely at the interconnectedness of Earth’s major systems–climate, water, land, ocean, urban, economic, energy, health, biodiversity, and governance systems–and developing evidence-based strategies for global sustainable development.

We are a Global Network Strategically Located to Collaborate Together.

Future Earth harnesses the experience and reach of thousands of scientists and innovators from across the globe – including a variety of partners and funders in the social and government sectors. We welcome you to learn more about our vast network by visiting their respective pages.

OUR VISION

The vision of Future Earth is of a sustainable and equitable world for all, where societal decisions are informed by openly-accessible and shared knowledge.

OUR MISSION

Future Earth’s mission is to advance research in support of transformations to global sustainability.

OUR PURPOSE

Future Earth convenes researchers and scholars from all parts of the world, across different societal and academic sectors, and across the natural, social, and human sciences. Future Earth initiates and supports international collaboration between these researchers and stakeholders to identify and generate the integrated knowledge needed for successful transformations towards societies that provide good and fair lives for all within a stable and resilient Earth system. Future Earth uses a rigorous transdisciplinary research and systems thinking approach throughout its work in which basic and applied research are combined to generate actionable, solution-oriented knowledge to inform and guide decisions by policy makers and practitioners at all levels of governance.

Future Earth is a network of scientists, researchers, and innovators designed to provide the knowledge needed to support transformations towards sustainability. Our focus on systems-based approaches seeks to deepen our understanding of complex Earth systems and human dynamics across different disciplines.  We use this understanding to underpin evidence-based policies and strategies for sustainable development.

Our Strategy

Future Earth develops the knowledge and tools that government, communities, and companies need to meet the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. By understanding connections among environmental, social and economic systems, Future Earth works to facilitate research and innovation, build and mobilize networks and shape the narrative, turning knowledge into action.

FACILITATE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Our 27 Global Research Networks explore interactions among humans and the planet’s land, air, water and biodiversity. We develop and partner on initiatives that experiment with technology, data, media, and new ideas.

BUILD AND MOBILIZE NETWORKS

Our networks link policy, business and civil leaders with researchers to address themes like health, urbanization, natural assets and more.

SHAPE THE NARRATIVE

We help incorporate the latest science into global decision-making and engage in conversations on sustainability solutions. See our 10 New Insights in Climate Science and award-winning Anthropocene Magazine for more.

Our History

Future Earth builds on more than three decades of global environmental change research that began with the the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), DIVERSITAS and the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP).

KEY MILESTONES AND EVENTS

Future Earth was officially announced in June 2012 at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), to be created as a global initiative to strengthen the interface between policy and science.

Over the next eighteen months, an open bidding process was held to operationalize the new initiative and a design phase was led by a Transition Team of more than 30 international experts representing the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and international policy, research funding, and business.

In 2014 a five-country consortium successfully bid to create an interim Future Earth Secretariat. Future Earth became fully operational with a permanent Secretariat at the end of 2015.
