ABOUT ALMA
The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) is a groundbreaking coalition of African Union Heads of State and Government working to eliminate malaria by 2030.
OUR VISION
The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) is a coalition of African Union Heads of State and Government established to drive accountability and action for results against malaria, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) and nutrition. ALMA’s vision is aligned with both the African Union Agenda 2063 – “The Africa We Want” which sets the elimination of malaria as a key goal and the Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, TB and Eliminate Malaria in Africa by 2030.
ALMA works to enhance accountability for results in the fight against malaria, focusing on the use of the scorecard accountability and action tracking mechanisms at continental, regional, national, sub-national and community levels. ALMA also works to sustain political and leadership commitment, and supports countries to track progress, identify bottlenecks and take action. ALMA also supports countries in the establishment of End Malaria Councils and Funds.
RESPONDING TO MALARIA
We are leveraging our collective knowledge and influence to bring about action and accountability as we fight one of our continent’s most devastating diseases by:
- Providing a forum to review progress and address challenges in meeting the malaria, Agenda 2063 and Sustainable Development Goals targets;
- Implementing a monitoring and accountability system through scorecard management tools, tracking results, identifying bottlenecks, and facilitating appropriate action;
- Supporting countries in the establishment of End Malaria Councils and Funds to enhance domestic resource mobilisation, including from the private sector and enhancing multi-sectoral engagement; and
- Identifying and sharing lessons learned for effective implementation of national programmes.
OUR HISTORY
The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), a coalition of African Union Heads of State and Government, was established in 2009 to launch a coordinated and effective response to the scourge of malaria.
ALMA was created in recognition of:
- The importance of malaria as a major health and development threat.
- The responsibility of African leaders to spearhead the fight against malaria and other major public health and development challenges on the continent.
- The need for collective action to achieve continental malaria control goals.
- The need for African leaders to prominently participate in the global movement to halt the incidence of malaria and other diseases, as part of the Millennium Development Goals.
In response to the need for a robust mechanism to strengthen accountability, transparency, action and follow-up on malaria commitments on the continent, the ALMA secretariat developed the ALMA Scorecard for Accountability and Action in 2011.
The scorecard has been successfully used at the Head of State and Government level as an advocacy and accountability tool. It has been adapted and scaled to support national, sub-national and local levels to track priority interventions and investments, identify gaps and institute and follow-up on remedial actions.
ALMA has thus distinguished itself in its role of enhancing accountability and, as such, its mandate has over the years expanded to support progress in Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) and more recently, the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) elimination agenda.
